What the Communications World does not want you to Know: The Advantages of Satellite Radio Communication

Satellite radio communication offers a distinct advantage over conventional communication for long distance service. Satellite links are unaffected by the propagation abnormalities that interfere with high frequency radio, are free from high attenuation of wire or cable facilities and are capable of spanning long distances without the numerous repeater stations required line of sight or troposphere scatter links. Satellite communication can furnish the greater reliability and flexibility of services needed to support worldwide communication systems.
The propagation of radio waves by satellite is not dependent on reflection or refraction and the waves are reflected only slightly by atmospheric phenomena. If the equipment is not up to the mark or not meeting the necessary requirements the working and reliability will be badly hampered. Therefore the reliability of active communication satellite system is essentially limited only by the reliability of the equipment involved and the skill of operating and maintenance personnel. This improvement of reliability is a remarkable advantage for long distance communications, which in the past have dependent mainly on unreliable high frequency propagation.
The destruction of an orbiting vehicle is within the state of the area in rocketry. However the destruction of single communication satellite would be difficult and expensive. It would be practically difficult to destroy a multiple satellite system in which each satellite has a different orbital pattern and period. The earth terminal offers a far more attractive target for destruction but they can be protected by same measures taken to protect other vital communication installations. A high degree of invulnerability to jamming is afforded by highly directional antennas at the earth terminals and by a wide bandwidth system that can accommodate sophisticated anti jamming techniques.
When satellites were first launched, only very large organizations, such as military and some communication firms could afford them. The reason being was many like expenses were so high that were no affordable, lack of technology and many technical complications. However the units that have been placed in the space since then have demonstrated the communications can be provided. As satellite power, frequency, and channel capability increase, it will be more and more feasible for small business and even individuals to utilize satellite systems.
Today communication systems offer great flexibility. They can provide multiple channel TV signals, long distance radio signals, thousands of voice channels for telephone system use, variety of music, different news channels, comedy programs, advertisements and last but not the least is the traffic updates. Another vantage in satellite radio is the absence of static. While driving to any place we don't get static the least bit. This is because the signal is digital and offers crystal clear voice. Satellites allow communication between two stations, simultaneously between many stations pair, or from one station to many stations each depending on how the satellite switches and handles the information.
