Comps are Nice but Don't Play for Them
I have a host that I'm thinking of divorcing. Every time we make a reservation through her it is very irritating for me to even talk to her. She will call us several times during the year and invite us to come and play at her casino and then when we call her back to schedule, she's nothing short of rude.
Most of the time when we play at this host's casino, because it is a short distance from our home by car, we have numerous people traveling with us and because they play like we do, then we expect their rooms comped. Keep in mind, we are taking relatively big players into this little town and we normally wouldn't expect that sort of courtesy up front in Las Vegas, Atlantic City or even Tunica until the casino had a chance to get to know them for their own play. However, when we stroll into this smaller casino town, we know we play more than their average local players.
The last time that I made a reservation through this particular host, I was just down right aggravated by the end of the call. I asked for three rooms for two nights, "Do you expect me to comp them all?" Yes all three of them for all two nights are what I felt like saying. "Is that a problem?" I asked as sincerely as possible. "Suzie, do they play like you or not, I mean I can't just comp anyone without seeing their play." I would certainly agree with this if she were anywhere else but this casino. "They play more than I play and they wager way more per hand than I do." I quickly added, "If it's a problem then we can stay down the road." Even this didn't phase her and my husband was chomping at the bit to stay down the road after I explained the situation to him. I secured the three rooms and even after hanging up was a bit miffed but let it pass.
However, when we arrived at the casino and I saw my friendly host, I was immediately put-off again because as she started to walk away, she looked right at my guests and said, "Now, I expect you all to play good for me, OK?" One of my guests was my brother who plays $100.00 hands of blackjack as a bare minimum bet. He was quite amused.
There's a lot to be said about fate and from the very beginning of this trip nothing was going according to plan. We were up and then we were down. Then we were way down and then back to even. By the end of the first day, my husband finally got up about $600.00 and called it a trip. I should've done the same thing early in the day but continued playing and was down about $400.00 by the end of the first day.
The next day, my husband spent the day on the golf course, which is the only reason we visit this particular casino anyway and my brother, his girlfriend and I all played our way into a hole. I imagine at one time my brother was down probably about $7000.00. Finally I crawled back to even. And I was done. I stayed in the casino quite a bit to visit with my brother and his girlfriend and we enjoyed a fun time later that evening over a nice dinner.
The next day, we went to check-out and our friendly host was at the counter. Keep in mind even though I stopped playing early, as a whole, our group of seven was leaving behind about $10,000.00. "Suzie, I'm just going to go ahead and charge you the casino rates on these rooms because you didn't give me the play that I was expecting from you personally." I didn't have to open my mouth. My brother jumped in quickly, "Look, we played far more than anyone you had down on your casino floor given the fact it was mid-week but I'll tell you something, Suzie was expecting this from you, so let me be real clear when I tell you, we don't play for comps and we can certainly pay for our room."
While I'd never really thought too much about it, I could certainly see why he makes more money than I do in a casino. A few years ago, I would've beefed up my bet just to gain more favor for comps. Now, I couldn't care less. If you're playing for comps, you are putting yourself in a position to where all you may have at the end of your stay is a comp whereas, if you play to win, then after a winning session, you can pay for far more than comps can buy. So decidedly, I believe that while the comps are great, there is really no reasonable explanation to play for them.
