NAAG: National Association of Attorneys General




Founded in 1907, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) was formed to aid Attorneys Generals from all over the country to provide the best legal services possible. The organization's main mission is to encourage interaction between individuals in the post of Attorneys General from all states and territories of this country. Additionally, the National Association of Attorneys General wishes to aid these individuals and their staff members in the performance of their duties.

Focusing on interagency and interstate cooperation, NAAG encourages relationships between the Attorneys General's offices and other organizations, including law enforcement agencies as well as other legal offices. The National Association of Attorneys General also works diligently so that these agencies may be able to cross state lines to help with cases of all regards and sizes. Currently led by the Indiana Attorneys General, Steve Carter, NAAG's executive committee features members from all fifty states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, US Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

The office of Attorneys General is an elected position in 43 states, Governor appointment in five states, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands, voted into office by the Legislature in Maine, a Mayoral appointment in the District of Columbia, and appointed by the state supreme court in Tennessee.

The position of the Attorney General is one of chief legal officer for the state, commonwealth, or territory. He deals with a variety of issues in all jurisdictions, and works closely with a variety of positions within these fields and neighboring areas. That is reason why the NAAG encourages interaction between all their members.

The National Association of Attorneys General provides educational and training opportunities associated with the position to its members and aides. It encourages them to enhance their expertise in all fields such as litigation skills, leadership, and management, among others.

Many individuals are not aware of what the position of Attorneys General entails. For this reason, the NAAG helps to educate the public regarding the position and the individual who holds it. Additionally, the NAAG promotes the importance of this position, especially in the states where the people can elect their state's or commonwealth's Attorneys General.

The main office of the National Association of Attorneys General is located on Capitol Hill in the District of Columbia. This location is prime due to its proximity to government officials, Congress, governmental agencies, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
