Traffic cops the tech savvy
"Private Buses are penalized 20 times then usual!!!!"
If it's the rain in Mumbai, it's the traffic in Delhi that keeps on haunting people. Road traffic is a real menace for Delhi. Every newspaper has an item on some or the other deplorable condition of road traffic in Delhi. It's a point of a huge concern as the people who suffer the most are the ones who commute through DTC buses. But the irony is that the ones concerned are least concerned about it.
Last Sunday there was news of a blue line bus hitting a road divider before swerving and crashing onto the pavement. The number of causalities happens to be eight. Well, news seems quite old in terms of its flavor and spice, but point of concern is the driver who was not plying on his usual route. Every now and then we see a case of reckless driving and over-speeding where we see the culprit escape with a meager amount of fine charged on it.
The latest traffic news we have is " Of the 4000 odd private buses plying on city roads , all have been penalised at least 20 times for rash driving and over speeding ". Reckless driving seems to be quite an associated term with blueline drivers as if they would be next Formula1 drivers. That is now a stale Delhi traffic news. I am sure there must be similar traffic news items about the Mumbai and Chennai.
In the midst of all this drama Delhi government is all set to give traffic police a more professional and scientific look by launching CrashLab2, the next generation mobile laboratory . The mobile lab, mounted on an Optra Tavera, would facilitate investigations of accidents in a most fair manner and also point out instances where motorists are not essentially at fault. Speaking at the inauguration, Joint Commissioner Delhi Traffic Police Qamar Ahmed said the technological innovation would be of utmost use to the traffic police in road safety audit. Additional Commissioner (Traffic) M.S. Upadhye said while it is important to save the vulnerable road users -- the pedestrians and the cyclists, a discussion and dialogue are equally essential to study road accidents in a scientific manner.
Indeed a good effort in making traffic police "tech savvy ". Let's hope they make judicious use of it.
