Used western saddles - price isn't everything

Tack shops are often a great source of used western saddles. As long as you follow a few guidelines, you can be just as happy with a good used saddle as a brand new one. Quality is important and saddlemakers are making models that can last a horses lifetime. If you are unsure of what to look for in used western saddles, make sure you enlist the help of someone knowledgeable.

The two most important factors in purchasing used western saddles are the safety and fit. While cost is a consideration, your horse's wellbeing and your safety outweigh any value a cheap used saddle may offer you. When shopping for saddles, always look for signs of wear and tear, especially around the billets and cinches. Billet holes quite often stretch and can become dry and brittle if not properly taken care of. Lining on a western saddle must be examined for holes and excessive wear, and the seat must be checked to make sure the stitching around the edges is not coming loose. Keep in mind that the seat and lining for the saddle can be very expensive to replace.

Once used western saddles are found to be safe and in good repair, have someone who is experienced check the fit on your horse. If the saddle is a good size and in good shape, it could last you for many years.
