Students: Victims Of Procrastination?

Procrastination although does not have a set of reserved victims but the ones suffering from this are mostly the students. To brief on what procrastination is all about, it can be said that it is that phase of life where one tends to avoid things that should have been done, the reason being sheer laziness and no control over time management. As for the people suffering from procrastination, they may end up feeling guilty or depressed seeing themselves in that condition. They wish to do many things but end up doing nothing. Procrastination is never an unusual thing but it is also not safe when it crosses its limits. Procrastination could happen due to many reasons but it has been observed that anxiety, inferiority complex about oneself and laziness are the key reasons. These are the psychological reasons but as far as the physiological reasons go, procrastination is the result of the poor functioning of a part of the brain called prefrontal cortex which is responsible for a person to pay attention and have control over one's will.

Why are students the victims of procrastination?

Students usually tend to suffer from procrastination due to their poor time management. The life of a student is usually filled with lots of challenges and tasks to complete. There is definitely an initial excitement but when they start doing it they end up feeling lazy and thus the work remains incomplete. Students not sure of their priorities and who do not much value their time are the main suffers of procrastination.
From time immemorial concentration has always been a problem with students. Whenever it is study time they end up doing all other things other than studying. Daydreaming, thinking of all that happened in the day, building up castles in the air and planning a romantic evening is all that they do sitting by their study table. This leaves them with very less time for their mandatory tasks. This is a reason enough to slip into the laps of procrastination.
Exams are a good enough reason to give nightmares to students but there are some who find it difficult to come out of that fear. Instead of preparing themselves for the exams, they end up spending their time worrying about their failure in the forthcoming exams.
Not all students are from the same background and not all have the same skills. Some may be very good in their studies and some in other activities. Thus the ones that do not excel that well in their studies, compared to the brilliant ones, end up having an inferiority complex and they live in the notion that they are not capable of doing things. They drop on their level of confidence and end up being a failure in their given task.
Other than studies there are many other distractions that could push the student into the well of procrastination. Financial problems at home, a tiff with one's folks, friend, sibling or partner could be a well enough reason for one to avoid one's duties.
Keeping too much of expectations is never good. Students often fail to judge their potentials right and expect from something that has never been their strong point. Thus if their expectations fail, they think that it is a total failure.
Initially a student might be very interested in what he/she does but towards the end of it they get board with whatever they had been doing.

Procrastination comes with a solution

A thorough brush up on one's time management is the perfect solution to overcome procrastination. The one's that do not value time are the one's that remain losers in life.
Identifying your goals and priorities in life. Look out for your strengths rather than wasting your time over your weaknesses.
Discipline is a very important value that ones needs to inculcate in themselves and when it comes to students it is a must. An indisciplined student, does not really perform well and they end up being in a total dejected mood.
Take reasonable breaks between your studies rather than studying in a stretch. This will not only help you help you shed out stress but will also not allow you to feel board.
Goal is a very important word and the sooner you understand its importance the better it will profit you. Always do things with an aim. Don't waste time over unnecessary things.
Take up assignments that you are capable of doing rather than taking it up just for the sake of it. Quality is always important than the quantity.
Students are always advised to do things in an atmosphere they are comfortable with rather than doing it because they have seen their friends doing it. Some of them enjoy studying with the music on but for some it is nothing more than a mere distraction.

Procrastination is neither a deadly disease nor is it a rare one. Every student undergoes this phase in life where he/she tends to neglect their duties for some or the other reason. Coming out of procrastination is also not difficult. It is just that you need to judge your self and your weaknesses right and find a way to come out of it. Nobody could help you overcome procrastination better than your self.
