Do Christians need to prepare for the Asteroid Apophis in 2029?
Around the globe there are stories popping up about Apophis, the asteroid that is going to come very close to a collision with earth in the year 2029. Amateurs and scientists do agree that currently there is not a great threat that it will hit the earth it will pass very close in relation to space distances. If it does come within 20,000 miles of earth it could do damage to satellites located in the Clarks Belt. These satellites are used for military, government, commercial, entertainment, weather, and communication purposes. The possibility to damage to them from Apophis is to far into the future to predict.
Though currently researchers feel the chances are 1 in 45,000 that it could collide with earth, the real concern is how earths gravitational influence on this pass could possibly make it collide with earth seven years later in 2036.
How does this news fit into Biblical beliefs? Could the Apophis asteroid be what the book of Revelation in the New Testament refers to as Wormwood (called Planet-X by some)? Revelation describes Wormwood as a large ball of fire in which Apophis could actually look like if it was to enter into earth's atmosphere on a collision course.
The year 2029 destruction with the asteroid Apophis does not fit into the timeline based upon how the Bible describes the sequence of events in the end times. It talks that the occurrence of Wormwood will take place right before the middle of the 70th week in a Sabbath year cycle. A Sabbath year cycle only takes place once every seven years. Based upon the original Sabbath year, Wormwood will not affect earth or severely hurt the human civilization in the year 2029.
From what the Bible says, Wormwood will cause havoc long before 2029. It appears that the Great Tribulation, the Rapture, and the Second Advent and Millennium will all take place before this time. This opinion is open to debate by many Christians and other religious groups throughout the world.
Currently the world is being exposed to a possible doomsday in the foreseeable future more than ever. The increase in scientific study of space has brought a public awareness about that something could go wrong in the future. The earth could be struck by an asteroid similar to Apophis as mentioned recently on CNN causing mass devastation and even knocking the earth into a different orbital path around the sun. This type of disaster would cause problems that are impossible to forecast.
The media shows the public that we should be aware that something like this can take place. Amateurs and professionals alike compare notes with the use of the Internet allowing for large networks of people to build a more solid look into what the future may hold for mankind.
Scientists are very aware that a catastrophe such as an impact from the Apophis Asteroid of 2029 could take place on earth someday. Tim McHyde has studied the likelihood of that asteroid actually causing havoc on earth and determined that Bible prophecy does not point to that time or that event. Recently he published "Know The Future".
