Golf Lovers Day - Swing It High !
From a tee to a swing to a hole... We are talking in Golf language ! Golf is undeniably one of the most popular sports that is played all over the world today. With no barrier to age and profession, we have golfers coming in from all walks from life. Dressed in their best with their favorite caddies accompanying them, golfers roam the year around in search for the best golfing greens and circuits.
Golf is a sport where individual players or sometimes teams hit a ball into a hole in the ground. It is one of those few sports that does not have a standard fixed area. Golf originated in Scotland and has been played in the British Isles and north European countries at least for five centuries. Often tagged as a sport enjoyed by the elite, it is an increasingly popular sport in all sections of the society. The game is played on a tract of land called the course, which consists of holes. Few golfing terms that are often heard are the Tee which is the predetermined area from which the ball is first hit, the Green which is the low cut area surrounding the actual hone in the ground, Hazards namely Water Hazards like lakes rivers and Bunkers which are usually Sand Traps. Another term is the Par, which is the number of strokes that a skilled golfer needs to complete the hole.
Every game of golf is played on the base of a number of holes in a given order. A round typically consists of 18 holes that are played in the order determined by the course. The two basic forms of golf playing are Match Play and Stroke Play. In Match Play, two players or two teams play every hole as a separate contest against each other. The part with the lower score wins that hole or if the score is equal, then the hole is 'halved'. The game is won by the party that wins the most holes. In Stroke Play, every player counts the number of shots taken for the tournament to produce the total score and the player with the lowest score wins. The game of golf has a lot more terms and rules to reckon with and here only the surface terms and rules have been brushed ! There are many variations of these basic terms, some of which are explicitly described in the 'Rules Of Golf'. Apart from these official rules, players also abide by certain rules known as the golf etiquette. Etiquette guidelines cover guidelines such as safety, fairness, easiness and pace of play.
What is about this game that attracts so many of us ? The elegant way in which it is played... with no rough and tough rules, no swearing and the least physical exertion ? Is the the dress code where you can actually dress in your Sunday best and go for a round of golf ? Or is the natural settings that are full of scenic beauty and along with being a players heaven are some of the most beautiful places in the world ? In many places, golf is the unofficial sport of the business world and such a benchmark can well be taken into account when one speaks of the popularity of this sport. The perfect way to unwind and de stress yourself would be to play a round of golf with your ever faithful caddie right behind you, giving in tips and words of encouragement. So, just don't wait anymore... go ahead and tee off on the greens !
