Tips to Crank Up Your Web Marketing




Experience is more or less defined as learning from your mistakes. Online, that can be an expensive proposition. To save you some money, here are a couple of things I have learned over the last 9 years.

1. Update Your Site often - Not only does this encourage people to return to your site, but search engine spiders as well. Frequently updated sites also tend to have better search engine rankings than those that sit static with few updates.

2. New Customers vs Old Customers - Many sites focus all there marketing efforts on getting new clients. While this is natural, it should not be done to the exclusion of old customers. Drip market on old customers by sending them discount and sale offers.

3. Keywords in Your Published Articles - If you publish articles to promote your site, be careful! If you put your main keyword phrases in the articles, the listings in the article directory may outrank you site!

4. SEO Conflict of Interest - When it comes to SEO firms such as ours, it is important to understand that have a conflict of interest. Simply put, they double dip by taking clients competing for the same keywords.

5. PPC vs SEO - The debate between PPC and SEO is a non-starter. If you don't have rankings, market with PPC. If you do, turn off all PPC ads for keywords under which you rank in the top 10.

6. Paying Search Engines for Traffic - Search engines sell traffic through something known as pay-per-click marketing. For most new sites, it is a good way to get immediate traffic. Just make sure you are making more money than you are spending.

7. Monitoring Rankings - Once you start to get rankings in Google, Yahoo and MSN, there is a tendency to check them every day. Don't. It is a huge waste of time. Check them no more than once or twice a week.

8. The Holy Grail of Type in Traffic - Regardless of the type of site you have, your ultimate goal is to get type in traffic. This occurs when a person types in your domain name instead of using a search engine. Amazon.com gets lots of type in traffic.

9. Perfect Internet Business - The perfect online business is whatever you love. It is going to take a lot of work, so figure out your interest and stick with it.

10. Spam versus Email Marketing - Everyone hates spam, but online sites love email marketing. If you are considering it, you need to make sure you are in compliance with the CAN-SPAM Act or risk going to jail.

Obviously, not all of these tips will apply to your site. Still, even a few can make a big difference, so try them out.
